Music Director Riccardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra began a three-nation tour of South America this week--its first Latin tour in 22 years--with concerts in Caracas, Venezuela. “I don’t know why so much time has passed since we’ve been here, and as for why now, I don’t consult astrologers,” Muti said on the eve of the orchestra’s debut performance. “But I hope to find the warmth, enthusiasm and disciplined reception that are usual for Latin peoples.” With a repertoire that is heavy on Beethoven, the Italian-born conductor will also take his 120-member orchestra to Argentina and Brazil.
