Local News in Brief : Irvine : Massage Parlor Law Will Be Considered
The City Council will consider final approval of a proposed new massage parlor ordinance at its next regularly scheduled meeting June 14.
The council Tuesday approved the first reading of the measure, which would require applicants who seek to open massage parlors to prove that they are free from contagious or communicable diseases.
The ordinance also would require massage parlors to show proof of medical malpractice insurance and at least 500 hours of massage training. Applicants would be required to undergo a background check by Irvine police.
City officials said the ordinance is intended to discourage any illegal activities.
The ordinance’s first reading passed on a 3-1 vote, with Mayor Larry Agran dissenting and Councilman Edward A. Dornan abstaining. Voting in favor of the measure were council members Ray Catalano, C. David Baker and Sally Anne Miller.
