The Philippine Senate approved a bill that would enforce a ban against nuclear weapons, including those carried on ships and aircraft. Similar legislation is frozen in the Philippine House of Representatives, which diminishes its chances of it being passed into law before the current session ends June 10. American officials had no immediate comment on the action, which came during negotiations between the two countries over the future of U.S. military bases in the Philippines. Last year, the United States scuttled its military alliance with New Zealand after its Parliament passed a similar anti-nuclear measure.
