The Nation - News from May 30, 1988
Americans got their summer off to a festive start with everything from barbecues to beach parties. With Memorial Day weekend temperatures in the 80s in many areas, Eastern beaches were packed. Tragedy marred the weekend as at least three people died off Ocean City, Md. Police said a man drowned about 90 minutes before lifeguards went on duty for the first time this season. And two people were killed and two were missing after a boating accident, authorities said. There were also solemn remembrances of the nation’s war dead. On Attu Island, Alaska, Americans and Japanese erected a monument that will be dedicated today to the thousands of soldiers from both sides of the Pacific who died during World War II.
