‘Wrong Road: No on 74’

I can’t believe the letter from our governor (May 22). He optimistically says we intend to pay back the bond in five years. Borrowing is bad economy no matter how you try to justify it. Bonds are bad business.

As a small businessman (seven employees) I am taxed out. It seems every quarter our biggest hurdle is paying taxes of some kind. One of the reasons I moved here from Europe was because of high taxes so I don’t particularly want any more. But I also believe in paying as you go so I would consider gas taxes to be a user fee.

With all the other taxes, I have to pay regardless of how much I use the system. With an extra gas tax I only pay if I use more gas. We already have the cheapest gas in the world and people waste it almost like they do water. Perhaps increased costs might make us all conserve it more, maybe even making us drive less, reducing the total amount of vehicles on our overcrowded system.

Partisan conflict is the major reason our whole government system does not provide the results it is capable of, nor even provide a level of service which the public has a right to. Petty sniping at those with opposing views can only widen the rift and further reduce the likelihood of sensible government. I am deeply saddened that our governor should inflame this situation.
