Teachers and students picketed Tuesday outside Carnegie Junior High School in Carson, seeking reinstatement of their principal. The principal, Lionel Joubert, a veteran administrator due to retire at the end of June, has been reassigned pending an investigation into his role in stopping a May 19 fight between two students, as well as other unspecified incidents, according to Los Angeles Unified School District officials.
In the demonstration Tuesday, several hundred students and teachers waved placards and chanted, “Bring back Joubert.”
Four students, who described themselves as witnesses to the fight between a ninth-grade student and a seventh-grader, said that the older student attempted to hit Joubert when he tried to stop the scuffle but that the principal did not strike back.
District spokesman Marty Estrin said officials hope to complete their review by the end of the week.
