The Nation : N.Y. Student Identification Cards Urged
New York City officials seeking to curb violence in public schools are considering a plan to issue identification cards to all students and install metal detectors in school buildings, Mayor Edward I. Koch said. The plan, which is to be studied over the summer by education officials, also calls for posting police at school buildings and the expulsion of students who assault teachers. The proposed measures were outlined by Koch at a City Hall news conference with the schools chancellor, police commissioner, teachers union leaders and four of the city’s five district attorneys. The plan was devised in response to attacks last week against five teachers. Currently, students are suspended and transferred to another school if they commit violent crimes, officials said.
