Confusion reigned over who kidnaped Alvaro Gomez Hurtado, 69, newspaper publisher and conservative politician in Colombia, and whether he is still alive. Police blamed leftist rebels for the kidnaping. However, an anonymous telephone caller to a radio station claimed responsibility for a group known as “The Extraditables,” who are seeking leniency for Carlos Lehder Rivas, a kingpin of the Medellin drug cartel convicted on drug charges last week in Florida. The caller said Gomez is alive, but injured. Earlier, radio stations had reported that an anonymous caller claimed Gomez died from gunshot wounds sustained during his kidnaping Sunday.
