W. German President Begins Swedish Visit
West German President Richard von Weizsaecker was greeted by torrential rain when he arrived Tuesday for a four-day state visit to Sweden.
The skies opened as Von Weizsaecker inspected an honor guard in the courtyard of Stockholm’s 17th-Century royal palace.
Palace officials, caught by surprise after three weeks of almost unbroken sunshine, were unable to rustle up umbrellas for the president and his host, King Carl XVI Gustaf. But the welcoming ceremony went on.
Von Weizsaecker’s schedule in Sweden includes a talk with Prime Minister Ingvar Carlsson and a wreath-laying ceremony at the grave of Carlsson’s slain predecessor, Olof Palme.
