The U.S. sales arm of Hyundai, the South Korean auto maker, said Thursday that it plans to build a $21-million parts distribution center in Ontario in San Bernardino County.

The company said the center--which will be built in two stages--would be the largest Hyundai parts depot in the United States. The center will be used to store most Hyundai parts for dealers in the West as well as slower moving parts for the entire country, officials said.

“Building a national parts distribution center is yet another strong indication of (Hyundai’s) long-term investment in the U.S. market,” said Bruce Campbell, a group vice president. ‘We already are able to fill our parts orders as well as any automotive company, import or domestic, and we intend to continue to be a leader in this field.”

The company said the center will be located in Ontario’s Vintage Industrial Park. The first 300,000 square feet is to completed next year, officials said, followed by an additional 200,000 square feet to be built by 1992.
