A severe storm system that stretched from Kansas deep into Texas riddled the Great Plains with heavy rain and hail. A separate storm system brought rain to the Tennessee and Ohio valleys and southwest Virginia. A cold front stretched across central Minnesota, Chicago and central Ohio and into the Middle Atlantic states, sending the mercury plummeting. A record low of 37 degrees was measured in Syracuse, N.Y., the National Weather Service said. In Texas, severe thunderstorms and hail hit hardest between Ft. Worth and Waco.
