Demonstrators who invaded the area around the finish line to protest industrial pollution forced cancellation of the 11th stage of the Italian cycling tour.
Organizers stopped the race 2 kilometers from the town of Colle Don Bosco in the Piedmont region and gave all cyclists the same time to prevent the pack from sprinting into the crowd.
About 2,000 residents demonstrated at the finish line shortly before the arrival of the cyclists. They carried posters protesting the alleged dumping of chemical waste into the Bormida river.
