‘Where’s the War Against the Legal Killer, Alcohol?’
I want to commend The Times for Paterson’s column. If we can lift from children the shame of admitting that a parent abuses them physically or sexually, how about helping them admit that they are abused by the constant shame, frustration and emotional trauma of an alcoholic parent?
Most of us who lived through the Prohibition experiment will agree that it was a failure. But that does not mean that we should not seek other ways by laws, programs and enlightened experimentation to stop this horrible--and expensive--parent-to-child destruction.
And “destruction” is the word. Those of us who have dealt with it will agree with Ms. Paterson: “The wounds go deep and the scars last a lifetime.”
