Vietnam Is Investigating 32 MIA-Related Cases, U.S. Team Says
Vietnam is investigating 32 cases that may involve Americans missing in action from the Vietnam War, a U.S. military team that visited Hanoi said Friday.
The five-member team, from the U.S. Joint Casualty Resolution Center and the Army Central Identification Laboratory in Honolulu, held three days of talks with Vietnamese government officials on accounting for nearly 1,800 Americans missing from the war.
“Some of this investigative work (by Vietnam) is still in the preliminary stages,” the U.S. team said in a statement. “Consequently, no conclusions can be drawn at this time from these investigations.”
The Vietnamese have often followed up on such announcements with returns of remains. The last was on April 6, when Hanoi handed over remains of 27 people--the largest transfer since U.S. forces withdrew from Vietnam in 1973.
