Squeezing Out Sparks

Sparks always has a hit song on KROQ-FM, the latest being “So Important.” But no major U.S. record company is willing to give the group a shot at stardom these days. So Ron and Russell Mael have recorded a new album, “Interior Design,” due out July 20 on their own label, Fine Art, which will distributed by Rhino/Capitol Records. In addition to the KROQ hit, it features “Love-O-Rama,” “I Just Got Back From Heaven” and a hilariously droll account of an imaginary affair with a triple-platinum blond named--yes--”Madonna.” Cruising in a limo “longer than the Golden Gate Bridge,” Ms. M takes Mr. Mael back to her penthouse where “one thing led to another, as they often do in these situations.” By the time the song comes back from its chorus, it’s morning. After Madonna kisses her lover goodby, Mr. Mael--ever the gentleman--croons confidentially: “And I never told anyone about this ‘cause after all, it’s none of their business what she or I did.”
