Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Michael Ryan ruled that “smoking gun” notes leading to the impeachment of ousted Arizona Gov. Evan Mecham may be read into evidence at his fraud and perjury trial in Phoenix. Mecham and his brother and campaign treasurer, Willard Mecham, are accused of violating state law by allegedly concealing a $350,000 campaign loan. The notes were those of Vern Gasser, a member of Mecham’s campaign finance committee, and contain the phrases “show Evan borrowed money” and “don’t show borrowed money.”
