Rafsanjani Again Iran Speaker
Hashemi Rafsanjani was reelected Speaker of Iran’s Parliament today, consolidating his hold on political and military power. Rafsanjani’s reelection came five days after the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini named him commander-in-chief of the armed forces in the wake of two major battlefield defeats in the war against Iraq.
Iran’s official Islamic Republic News Agency, monitored in Nicosia, said 187 of the 192 parliamentary deputies whose credentials have been approved since elections in April and May voted for Rafsanjani.
