SCR Gets $250,000 Gift From Segerstrom Unit

South Coast Repertory has received $250,000 from the Segerstrom Foundation, bringing the total take in its current $6.5-million capital campaign to $5 million.

SCR spokesman Cristofer Gross, who announced the gift Tuesday, said the money will be used for the development of new plays.

The gift, which had been announced to SCR supporters at a dinner last week, was not a response to news that the theater had been chosen to receive a Tony award, Gross said. “The Segerstroms have known about this (the gift) before (the Tony was announced).

“This is the third huge gift from the Segerstrom family, six digits, in the history of the theater,” Gross added. “It brings the amount that the Segerstrom family has given to us to well over $1 million.” Previous gifts from the Segerstroms to SCR included land for the theater complex and a $200,000 gift in 1984.

This is the first gift to anyone from the newly formed Segerstrom Foundation. Information on the foundation’s future plans was unavailable.
