The World : Ethiopia Expels Red Cross
The International Committee of the Red Cross said it is halting aid to millions facing starvation in northern Ethiopia after the government ordered all foreign Red Cross staff members to leave the region. The agency has proposed to transfer its 36,000 tons of mainly cereal stocks worth $14.7 million and 208 vehicles to other organizations still operating in drought-stricken areas. The Geneva-based agency did not specify the other organizations. An unresolved dispute between the Red Cross and the Marxist Ethiopian government has existed for several months.
