Two Soviet cosmonauts and a Bulgarian were launched from the Baikonur rocket base in Central Asia in the Soviet Union’s first manned space shot of 1988. The launch, televised live, carried Alexander Alexandrov of Bulgaria toward the Mir orbiting station with Soviets Anatoly Solovyov and Viktor Savinykh. Reports from the cosmonauts said the flight was proceeding normally. The three men are due to conduct 40 experiments during their 10-day mission aboard Mir, the giant space laboratory launched in February, 1986.
