Michael Jansen in his column “For Syria and Iran, Stakes Are High in Battle for Southern Slums of Beirut” (Opinion, May 22) misunderstood a very significant point: the difference between the Islamic world of Hezbollah and the capitalistic world of the West.

The Islamic revolution of Iran proved to us that human courage is much more powerful than military arms. It is true that Tehran is 1,000 miles from Beirut, making Amal much more powerful in arms (since it is backed up by Syria), but again arms are far less powerful than human courage. The members of Hezbollah have the strongest weapon in the history of the world--martyrdom--enabling them to win the Beirut slums from the Syrian-backed Amal, proving again the power of human courage.
