Pacifists perched on scaffolding in Warsaw showered a military band with anti-draft leaflets in a protest that turned into a spectacle for churchgoers in the Polish capital. Hundreds watched as two pacifists from the Freedom and Peace movement shouted slogans and threw leaflets for half an hour before police took them into custody. Bystanders shouted “Solidarity,” “Freedom and Peace” and insults at police. The leaflets demanded freedom for 16 supporters of the movement jailed for refusing military service. The government has promised alternative civic service for conscientious objectors, but legislation has not yet reached Parliament.
