A DC-9 jetliner flying through fog crashed into a forest as it approached the runway here Sunday, killing all 22 people aboard, officials said.

A statement from the private Austral Airlines said the plane, carrying seven crew members and 15 passengers, was “totally destroyed. . . . It is presumed there are no survivors.”

The full names and nationalities of those aboard were not immediately released. Most were believed to be Argentine.

The flight originated in Buenos Aires, 750 miles to the south.

Early news reports were contradictory. The news agency DYN said the pilot lost control of the jet when it exploded a mile from the runway as it approached Posadas in a fog.

However, the rival news agency Noticias Argentinas said the jet fell “without any noticeable mechanical failure.”
