Armenia Body OKs Annexation
A defiant Armenian legislature today endorsed a move to annex part of a neighboring republic, saddling the central government with a new crisis in the months-old dispute between two southern ethnic groups.
A correspondent for the Armenian Communist Party newspaper Kommunist said the southern republic’s Supreme Soviet voted to approve the request of the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region’s legislature to secede from Azerbaijan and join Armenia. He said the meeting was broadcast live on television, a first for the republic.
