Votes on the Initiatives

I am getting sick of the initiative process in California. When we find people voting to provide public funding for political campaigns, while simultaneously voting to outlaw public funding, it is clear that the voters don’t understand the issues.

But then I’m not at all happy with the legislative process, either. We wouldn’t be in this mess if our legislators were responsive to our interests. I’ve seen too many times where Sacramento has dragged its feet for so long that the voters finally turn for relief to some poorly worded proposition, which may have been written by some special interest group taking advantage of voter frustration.

And while I’m on the subject, I’m also sick the two-party system, which gives us only one more choice than the Soviet system provides. No wonder our voter turnout is so low.

It looks to me like we need a major overhaul of both the initiative and the legislative processes. Maybe we should completely rewrite the entire state Constitution. Unfortunately, the people who would do the rewriting are most likely the ones who got us into this mess. Government by frustration is not the proper foundation of democracy.
