Vietnam will withdraw its military command from Cambodia on June 30 as part of a planned pullout of about 50,000 troops by year’s end, the Ministry of National Defense said. In a brief statement carried by official Radio Hanoi, the ministry said the remaining Vietnamese forces will be placed under the command of the pro-Vietnamese Cambodian government, which is fighting a guerrilla war against an estimated 50,000 rebels. Vietnam announced May 26 that it would withdraw the 50,000 men, part of an estimated 120,000 Vietnamese troops in Cambodia, this year as it seeks to achieve a complete pullout by 1990.
