The Soviet Union will issue new coins of gold, platinum, silver and palladium to mark “the millennium of Russia’s being in the sphere of world culture,” Tass said Wednesday.

The official news agency linked the coin issue, conducted as a joint venture with a West German bank, with the 1,000th anniversary of Christianity in Russia now being celebrated by the Russian Orthodox church.

The coins, to be issued in October, are to bear the images of the St. Sophia cathedrals of Kiev and Novgorod and of Prince Vladimir, who introduced Christianity to Russia in the year 988, Tass added.

It said the joint venture between the Soviet Foreign Trade Bank, the Soviet State Bank and Ost-West Handelsbank AG of West Germany will also conduct operations with gold ingots, gold leaf and collectors’ coins.
