AIDS Education

In response to “Growing Number of Teen AIDS Victims Linked to Bravado, Sex and Drugs,” Part I, May 29:

Two glaring obstacles stand in the way of effective AIDS education among our teen-agers: 1) the attention of health education teachers and other school personnel is focused on sexual behavior rather than intimacy and sexuality, and 2) right-wing homophobes insist on narrowing abstinence-based education efforts to “heterosexuals” and “within the context of marriage” (SB 2394, Sen. Newton Russell, R-Glendale).

As a result, while AIDS education is technically excellent, puritanical attitudes and homophobia make it irrelevant to most students.
