Nancy Reagan on a Wife’s Duty to Protect Her Husband
Mrs. Reagan has every right to give wifely protection to her husband but she cannot shield him nor change what he has become--a facade, a mirage of strength and stability.
Was Eleanor not a devoted wife to Franklin Roosevelt? Bess to Harry Truman? Mamie to Dwight Eisenhower? Pat to Richard Nixon? Were these and other first ladies not concerned about their husbands’ personal welfare? How were they able to separate their devotion from affairs of state?
Reagan is a nice enough man, but by having to pretend for seven years to being something he could never be--a tough, competent, effective, and intelligent world leader--he has earned much of the ridicule heaped upon him. How sad. If only the world were less hostile. If only America were a monarchy. What a wonderful king and queen Nancy and Ronnie would have been.
