Jackson, Dukakis and the Democrats
If Bush has earned the Republican nomination for President and Dukakis has earned the Democratic nomination, then surely Jackson has earned the right to play an important role in any Democratic Administration. If he does not become the vice presidential candidate, why not a cabinet post?
No politician on the scene today understands the plight of our inner cities as well as Jackson does, nor the toll it takes on the lives of the millions who live there, particularly the young.
Why not establish a cabinet post to address the problems of the cities--the unemployment, the drugs, the gangs, the schools, the poverty, the decay? Jackson seems able to galvanize a lot of the young people who feel otherwise alienated from politics (and from society). They admire and respect him.
Something must be done, and soon, to reclaim a generation of Americans for whom the American dream is little more than a myth. Maybe we should give the job to Jackson. Maybe we could call the job the secretary of hope.
