The World : Czechs Raid Peace Talks

Share

Czechoslovak police detained at least 12 people and ordered 33 Westerners from 16 nations to leave the country after raiding an unofficial peace seminar in Prague, an emigre publication reported. The nationalities of the foreigners expelled were not given. More than 50 people had gathered in the Prague apartment of rights activist Jan Urban despite warnings by police not to hold such meetings, according to the London-based Palach Press. It said the police raid came after the participants signed a statement condemning the disruptions by police of two peace meetings the day before. The statement also supported a proposal by the Czechoslovak human rights group Charter 77 to set up a “European Peace Parliament” of non-governmental organizations.
