The House Banking Committee approved legislation today authorizing $427 million to renew and expand a program of aid to the homeless which was approved by Congress last year.

The voice-vote approval came after the Democrat-controlled committee rejected along party lines, 30 to 19, a proposal by Reps. Marge Roukema (R-N.J.) and Tom Ridge (R-Pa.), which would have channeled homeless aid from a categorical grant program to block grants.
