Rebel Roman Catholic Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, 82, said that cooperation with the Vatican is no longer possible, and he reaffirmed his decision to consecrate four bishops without papal authority. Lefebvre’s announcement last week of his plans to consecrate the bishops June 30 drew public warnings from Pope John Paul II and other church leaders. Elevating bishops without papal permission seems certain to result in the Frenchman’s excommunication. In a statement, Lefebvre accused the Vatican of “continuous and cruel persecution to force our submission” to the reforms launched by the Second Vatican Council in 1962-65.
