New Jersey Democrats defused a growing party dispute by increasing the Rev. Jesse Jackson’s delegation at the Democratic National Convention next month in Atlanta.

The compromise reached Tuesday night between supporters of Jackson and Michael S. Dukakis gives Jackson eight more delegates, in addition to the nine delegates he won in the June 7 primary.

Jackson’s supporters felt he deserved more than nine delegates because he won 33% of the popular vote but, under New Jersey’s delegate system, got only 12% of the delegates.

State Democratic leaders also voted to send Academy Award-winning actress Olympia Dukakis to the convention next month in Atlanta as an at-large delegate for Dukakis, her cousin.
