Duarte : Cost of Pure Water Mounts

Share

Duarte will have to pay $90,000 more than the city engineer had hoped to ascertain that a former landfill is not leaking hazardous waste into surrounding ground water.

The Regional Water Quality Control Board has directed the city to install four monitoring wells around the site of the former landfill, now the Rancho Duarte Golf Course.

In a statement to the Redevelopment Agency last week, city engineer Dwight French said he had proposed drilling two monitoring wells in addition to testing existing wells for the state-mandated solid waste assessment test. He said he had made a compromise offer to drill a third well should contaminants be found, but the control board insisted on all four monitoring wells.

The additional drilling brings the total cost of the testing to $144,000, according to Lockman & Associates, the engineering consultant firm contracted by the city to perform the tests.
