Governor Vetoes Helmet Bill

Share

I was appalled to read that the governor vetoed the motorcyclist helmet bill. He has condemned many a young person to an early death that could have been saved by a helmet. Many of the young people riding cycles are led to believe it is not “macho” to wear a helmet and I wrote this in a letter to Floyd in support of the bill.

Where do I come from? Well, I started riding in World War II in the Army; I am now 69 years old. In the past 14 years I’ve ridden street bikes over 100,000 miles--about 8,000 miles a year. (Except the past year, I do not have a bike.) I was fortunate that I never went down or had a collision, but I always wore a helmet, a jacket, boots and gloves. A helmet should be the minimum safety requirement for riding.

I would hope the Legislature would have enough guts to override the veto in the interest of saving lives and extended injuries. But the legislators won’t.

I’m really upset with the governor’s common sense and I voted for him.
