British Foreign Secretary Geoffrey Howe said he opposes any deal for the release of British hostages in Lebanon and that any major improvement in Anglo-Iranian diplomatic relations is up to Tehran. Howe told a meeting of the Assn. of American Correspondents in London that this week’s private visit of four British lawmakers to Tehran has not changed London’s policy toward Iran or the hostage issue. Meanwhile, a United Arab Emirates newspaper reported that Church of England envoy Terry Waite and two other British hostages have been moved from Beirut to Iran and will be freed within the “next few days.”
