Canada Bans 2 More Soviets for Spying; Retaliation Expected
Two more Soviet envoys were expelled or barred from Canada on Thursday in a spy squabble, and a Soviet Embassy spokesman said his side will take further retaliation.
The latest action by Canada brings to 19 the number of Soviets expelled or barred from returning to the country since Tuesday. The Soviets have expelled or barred five Canadians.
The Soviets were accused of seeking military and industrial secrets and trying to infiltrate Canada’s intelligence agencies.
The External Affairs Department said that Col. Grigory S. Roublev, a top-ranking military attache at the Soviet Embassy here, was expelled and given until Monday to leave.
A former second secretary at the embassy, Sergei M. Kashtanov, was told he can never return.
Within minutes of the orders issued Thursday, spokesman Vyacheslav Bogdanov at the Soviet Embassy said, “There is no doubt whatsoever that there will be retaliation” by Moscow.
