‘Bull Durham’ Strikes Out

Share

Nancy Mills and Patrick Goldstein wasted a lot of newsprint trying to convince Calendar readers that “Bull Durham” is something that it is not--”a romantic comedy.”

I’m not much of a moviegoer but my 32-year-old son convinced me that we should attend this “funny baseball film” together as part of my Father’s Day weekend celebration.

The language would have made a longshoreman blush and the leading characters spent a great deal of their time “doing it.” If this film is “a romantic comedy,” as it is advertised, then “Fatal Attraction” should be recommended for showings at children’s birthday parties.

It becomes steadily more apparent that sex and gutter language have become a substitute for good movie scripts and direction. Have The Times’ editorial board take a look at this film that is being approved and recommended by Calendar.

Instead of four stars this movie rates “four balls” and everyone knows that means “take a walk.”
