Philippine Officials Ask Church for Help Against Insurgency
Defense officials are soliciting the active participation of Philippine churches to help put down a 19-year-old Communist insurgency, a government spokesman said Friday.
He said the Department of National Defense has forged an alliance with six church organizations in a bid to improve relations between the two sectors and at the same time use the influence of the church in helping defeat the rebels.
“In certain areas, only the church is listened to. It is a very effective tool,” a Defense Department spokesman said.
