SAND CASTLE CONTESTS AND CLASSES

Here is a list of sand castle contests and classes in the region:

One-day workshops at Cove Beach in Dana Point Harbor. Workshops for children and adults will be held from 9-10:30 a.m. July 9, July 30 and Aug. 30. Fee: $3. Register with Orange County’s Dana Point Youth and Group Facility at (714) 661 7122.

Orange County Fair, Costa Mesa, from July 7-July 17. Free sand castle contest every day of the fair from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for children 5 and over and for adults on the fairground’s improvised “Cow-A-Bunga Beach.” A free exhibition of a fantasy sand castle by Sand Castles Unlimited, a Newport Beach sand-sculpting firm, daily, during regular fair hours at “Cow-A-Bunga Beach.”

Sand-sculpting competition in San Clemente during the San Clemente Ocean Festival on July 16, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Categories are professionals, local businesses and children under 12, for “best castles of your mind,” best replica of a real castle and “creatures of the sea.” Entry fee is $3 per person.

United Way Sandcastle Festival from 11 a.m to 3 p.m. Sept. 17-18 at Seal Beach, north of the pier. On Sept. 17, the contest is for 12-person teams drawn from United Way agencies, corporations and interested groups. Entry fees will range from $25 to $50. Free for United Way agencies. On Sept. 18, contest for professional sand sculptors from around the nation and Canada. There also will be workshops in building sand castles at Seal Beach the month before the contest.

Newport Harbor Chamber of Commerce sand castle building contest from noon to 2 p.m. on Oct. 16. Sponsored by the chamber’s Commodores’ Club, categories include youth groups, families and individuals, clubs and organizations and business firms. Entry fees are $50 for businesses and $25 for all other categories. Awards are given for “most unique, most humorous and overall best sand castle,” as well as a special category open to all entrants entitled “Anything Goes.” Sculptors may use props and food coloring as long as the extras are biodegradable.
