A special U.N. General Assembly session on disarmament ended in failure after delegates were unable to adopt a final document on nuclear arms reduction. The lengthy closing session ended when committee members could not bridge the differences in disarmament positions held by the Soviet Union and developing nations and a more cautious approach backed by the United States and some of its Western allies. Delegates never voted on a final document. U.S. Ambassador Max Friedersdorf said he regretted the session’s failure to achieve consensus but said it had been a useful meeting.
