Juan Antonio Samaranch of Spain, president of the International Olympic Committee, promised Greece that if it works hard at the project, Athens will get the 1996 Olympic Games.

Speaking in Athens a few hours before Premier Andreas Papandreou launched an official Greek campaign to hold the centennial modern Olympics in the city where the ancient Games were revived, Samaranch said:

“I don’t think the other candidates should worry you. If you work hard, I can tell you that Athens will be the host country.”
