Local News in Brief : Countywide : Amnesty Filing Fees Loaned to 44 Aliens

Share

Forty-four people who applied for legal resident status under the recently expired amnesty period of the new immigration law will receive interest-free loans from the Santiago Club to pay for amnesty filing fees.

The nonprofit organization, which promotes Latino interests in Orange County, is providing about $8,000 in loans to the applicants through Catholic Charities of Orange County, which processed the applications, according to Jennifer de Lima, legalization coordinator for Catholic Charities. Loan repayments will be $25 a month.

The loan recipients waited until the end of the yearlong amnesty to apply because they could not afford the filing fees of $185 per person, de Lima said. But caseworkers from Catholic Charities told them to apply anyway because they were hopeful that loan funds could be found.
