Morales Case Prompts Letter
President Reagan sent a letter to President Miguel de la Madrid about Mexico’s refusal to extradite a Puerto Rican separatist accused of being a terrorist bomber, the U.S. Embassy said.
Ambassador Charles J. Pilliod delivered the letter to De la Madrid on Friday, an embassy spokesman said. He added that he did not know what the letter said or if De la Madrid gave Pilliod a reply.
The State Department has already expressed “outrage” at Mexico’s decision to free William Morales, 37, who fled the United States in 1979 after being convicted of weapons and explosives charges in New York.
Pilliod returned to Mexico on Thursday night from Washington. He had been recalled for consultations after Morales was freed from prison and put on a plane to Cuba on June 24.
