In Dhaka, Bangladesh, government riot police used batons and rifle butts Sunday to disperse hundreds of actors, actresses and others demonstrating against increased taxes on movie tickets in that country. Police said the confrontations started when the demonstrators tried to lead their protest march toward Parliament House in defiance of a government ban. Hospital sources said at least seven people, including popular film star Abdur Razzak, were given first aid. Dara Shiko, vice-president of Bangladesh’s Film Artistes’ Assn., described the police action as barbarous and inhumane. “Police even did not spare the actresses who begged for mercy,” he told a news conference.
