A West German military helicopter slammed into a mountainside in the Bavarian Alps and exploded, killing all nine people aboard, the Defense Ministry said in Bonn. The U.S.-made Bell UH-1D, carrying four military personnel and five civilians, crashed six miles south of the tourist resort of Garmich-Partenkirchen, the ministry said. The helicopter, based at Neuhaus air base in Bavaria, crashed and exploded a few minutes after taking off from an alpine guide training camp near the Austrian border, about 280 miles southeast of Bonn, officials said.
