The organizers of “The NAMES Project,” the memorial quilt which honors the victims of AIDS, are faced with the conflict of creating a burgeoning work of art they would like only to finish.

“We’re tired, and we want it to stop,” Project staffer Marcel Miranda said in San Francisco. But that will not happen, Miranda said, until the names stop coming in.

The colorful jumble of fabric and lettering from all 50 states and seven foreign nations is now making its way around the United States on a national tour. Some panels are festive, using everything from leather and lace to sequins and spangles. Rock Hudson’s has silver stars, mirrored disks and a rainbow.
