Irvine Council Vote Recount Is Under Way

Share

The Orange County registrar of voters Tuesday began recounting the ballots cast in Irvine’s June 7 City Council election.

Attorney Frank Lunding requested the recount after council member Sally Anne Miller finished only 106 votes ahead of Public Safety Commission member Cameron Cosgrove in a contest for a four-year term on the council, with a two-year term going to the other candidate.

The outcome of the weeklong recount could affect crucial council votes. Miller is a critic of Mayor Larry Agran; Cosgrove is an Agran political ally.

By late Tuesday afternoon, four of Irvine’s 110 precincts had been recounted with no changes from the original, machine-counted totals from June 7, assistant registrar Rosalyn Lever said.

Miller was elected to a regular four-year term on the council. Cosgrove is due to fill the remaining two years of Agran’s unexpired term now that Agran has become the city’s first mayor chosen directly by voters and not by the council.

Lunding, a Cosgrove supporter, said he felt the 106-vote margin between Miller and Cosgrove for the longer term was too close to go uncontested.

Officials said the recount could take a week.
