Local News in Brief : Oriental Fruit Flies Found

Share

Two Oriental fruit flies were discovered last week in Lincoln Heights, but prompt eradication measures should prevent further infestations by the fruit-destroying pests, county officials said Tuesday.

A single adult male Oriental fruit fly was detected in an insect survey trap Friday in the east Los Angeles community, and a second adult male was trapped Saturday a mile away, said Leon Spaugy, the county’s agricultural commissioner.

Although the Oriental fruit fly is one of the most destructive of all fruit flies, Spaugy said he expects no difficulties in dealing with the pest because immediate steps were taken to eradicate it.

“Our county-state team has successfully eradicated Oriental fruit fly infestations in Los Angeles County over a dozen times since 1966, including three major infestations last year in Hawaiian Gardens, Long Beach-Carson and Montebello-Bell Gardens,” Spaugy said in a prepared statement.
